File management

File management happens in the left sidebar file tree: create, import, reorder, organise and delete documents, and decide which ones are included in the final compile (export).

Create content

The action bar offers three ways to add content:

  • New document — a blank document;
  • New folder — to organise chapters or parts;
  • New PDF insert… (desktop) — add a PDF insert that can contain one or more pages.

Import

  • Single document: File > Import Document… (.md, .txt, .docx).
  • Folder: Import folder imports a whole folder (.md/.markdown/.txt/.docx) at once, preserving its folder hierarchy.
  • Whole Project: Import project ZIP or File > Import Project… restores a previously exported ZIP.
  • You can also import Markdown into the current document from the editor toolbar.

Export & back up

  • Export project as ZIP: the action in the file-tree toolbar bar (see Project management → Back up).
  • Export to Markdown from the editor: save the current document as .md.
  • To export manuscripts to image / EPUB / Word / PDF, see Exporting.

Reorder & organise

  • Drag documents and folders in the tree to reorder them — drop before, inside or after a target.
  • Folder type (set from the right-click menu) determines whether documents are compiled by default:
    • Manuscript (M, green) — included in compilation;
    • General (G, gray) — excluded by default;
    • Ignore (!, orange) — always excluded.
  • Folders can also be given an icon, making it easy to tell parts, chapters and assets apart.
  • When you compile, Scribe merges the included documents in file-tree order.

Include documents in compilation

Every document can be included in or excluded from compilation. On export, All Compilable includes only documents that are included, so drafts, notes and assets can sit in General or Ignore folders without affecting the finished output.

Apply a master page or split during import

  • Apply Master Page to selected documents: select documents and assign a master page in one action. See Master pages.
  • Split by # headings: before importing a long document, enable this option if each level-one heading should become a separate Scribe document.

Delete documents

Select documents and use Delete selected in the action bar, or delete a single document from its right-click menu. Back up before deleting.
