Page templates

Plan: Pro.

A page template stores reusable document content. Use one to start a title page, copyright page, dedication, chapter opener, or another document whose structure you want to repeat.

Paper size, margins, binding, header and footer areas, and other page geometry belong to Master Pages, not page templates.

Built-in templates

Scribe includes these starting points:

TemplateTypical use
Title PageBook title and author information.
Copyright PageCopyright and publication information.
DedicationA dedication page.
EpigraphAn opening quotation or epigraph.
Table of ContentsA contents document.
Chapter OpenerA consistent chapter opening structure.
About the AuthorAuthor information.
Blank PageAn empty starting document.

Create a document from a template

  1. Open Page Templates from the left sidebar.
  2. Select a template and review its preview.
  3. Choose Use Template.
  4. Name the new document and place it in the Project.

The regular New document action creates a blank document; choose a template from Page Templates when you want templated content.

Save your own template

  1. Prepare the document content you want to reuse.
  2. In the file tree, open the document menu and choose Save as Template….
  3. Add a name, category, group, and optional description.
  4. Choose This project only or All my projects, then save.

A Project-only template travels with that Project. A template saved for all Projects belongs to the user library and should be backed up separately.

Documents created from a template remain associated with it. In Page Templates, choose Sync (n) to copy the current template content to its derived documents. Synchronization replaces their current content, so review the affected documents first.

To edit a derived document independently, open its file-tree menu and choose Unlink from Template.

Prepare the final layout

Page templates provide content, not a guaranteed fixed-page layout. Apply the appropriate master page and Appearance, then check Image, E-book, Print, and other exports separately.
