Bibliographies, Ruby, and math

Plan: Pro.

Scroll Pro can prepare bibliographies, citations, references blocks, Ruby, and equations during drafting for later use in Scribe. Scribe remains responsible for final styling, pagination, and export.

  • Creating, importing, browsing, and searching ordinary reference cards is included with Free.
  • Linking a document or card to reference material requires Plus.
  • Preparing bibliography information for Scribe and inserting citations or references blocks requires Pro.

An ordinary reference link means that a document is related to a source. It does not become a formal citation automatically. A formal citation needs a Cite key and prepared bibliography information.

Prepare bibliography information for Scribe​

  1. Open References.
  2. Import the source file, or select New text ref for a text source.
  3. Under Reference metadata, enter the Cite key, Type, Authors, Year, URL, Tags, and Category.
  4. Select Save card to save the ordinary reference-card information.
  5. Select Create bibliography projection to prepare the information for Scribe, or Refresh bibliography projection when it already exists.

The last two button labels are the terms currently shown in the English interface; they prepare or refresh the bibliography information that Scribe reads. Changing the reference card does not refresh that information automatically. Before delivery, refresh it and confirm that every Cite key is unique.

Insert a citation or references block​

  1. Open a Markdown document in Visual Mode.
  2. Place the cursor where the citation should appear.
  3. Select Insert citation, then choose a Cite key.
  4. At the location for the bibliography, select Insert references block.
  5. Save the document and review citations and references blocks in the inspector.

You can also enable structured bibliography tools in the inspector, select a source, and insert a citation or references block there.

A references block marks where the list belongs. It is not a fully typeset bibliography inside Scroll. Scribe determines the citation style, pagination, and export result.

Insert Ruby​

Ruby is suitable for short readings such as Japanese furigana or Chinese pronunciation annotations:

  1. Place the cursor in a Markdown document in Visual Mode.
  2. Select Insert ruby.
  3. Enter the base characters under Ruby base text and the reading under Ruby annotation.
  4. Select Insert, review the result, and save.

The result keeps both the base text and annotation. Scribe determines final placement in horizontal or vertical typesetting and in exported files.

Insert math​

Scroll provides three math actions:

  • Insert inline math for LaTeX within a paragraph;
  • Insert math block for a separate equation, with a label, numbering choice, and width; and
  • Reference equation for a link to an existing numbered equation.

Enter LaTeX when inserting an equation. Before creating an equation reference, give the math block a unique equation label. If a label changes, check every reference that used it.

Saving and plan changes​

Back up or move the complete Project, including hidden files and folders. If Scroll reports that it cannot save safely, make a Project backup before following the recovery instructions in the app.

If the plan changes to Free or Plus, or the plan cannot be refreshed temporarily:

  • bibliography and citation information remains in the Project, but related creation actions and some previews are unavailable;
  • Ruby displays its base text; and
  • equations display readable LaTeX source.

After Pro is restored and refreshed, you can continue editing the existing advanced content. Scribe's ability to style and export citations, Ruby, and math depends on the current Scribe plan and version. See Prepare a manuscript for Scribe.
