Manage local Projects and files

A Scroll Project is an ordinary local folder that you choose. Prose and cards remain readable, while Scroll stores Project settings, tasks, saved views, and delivery records alongside them. Treat the complete Project as one unit whenever you move or back it up.

Create or open a Project

  • For new work, select New Project, then create or choose an empty folder in the system picker. The folder name becomes the default Project name.
  • For an existing Markdown folder, make a working copy first, then select Open Project to open it in place.
  • To copy source text into the active Project, import a folder and review the resulting hierarchy, skipped items, and any safely renamed duplicates.

The first time you open a folder, Scroll prepares it for Project features. When Set up this project for Scroll? appears, select Create for the full workspace, or Not now to postpone setup. Create content folders such as manuscript, characters, and locations according to the needs of the Project.

Import existing text

Text import supports Markdown, TXT, YAML/YML, and .vns. Before importing, confirm UTF-8 encoding, duplicate names, and paths that differ only by letter case. Import PDF, image, Word, or audio research through References so Scroll can make a managed copy.

After import, spot-check the folder hierarchy, non-ASCII characters, Wiki links, YAML frontmatter, and Story recognition. Establish classification rules with a small set of files before reorganizing a large collection.

Organize and rename

Prefer moving and renaming Project items inside Scroll. Then check links, Related Files, saved views, and work sources. After a change in an external file manager, Scroll may need time to update or may ask you to resolve a conflict.

Export editable source files

Exporting a selection copies the chosen source files. It does not create PDF, EPUB, print output, or a Scribe Appearance. Compare the file count and folder hierarchy and open the first and last chapter in the exported copy.

Back up the whole Project

Close Scroll, then copy the complete Project folder with Finder or another trusted backup tool. Include hidden files and folders. Copying only the prose omits saved views, tasks, canvases, and delivery records.

The backup actions under Global Settings are currently unavailable. Back up Projects by copying their complete folders.
