EPUB export

Plan: Plus or Pro.

Scribe exports a reflowable EPUB 3 file. Many bookstores and reading apps support EPUB, but each service sets its own current upload and metadata requirements. Validate the file for the target service before publishing.

Prepare the Project​

In Project Settings, review the title, author, language, synopsis, ISBN, copyright information, and optional e-book cover that apply to the edition. Only supported, available fields are included in the export.

Open E-book preview and use the right sidebar to review EPUB Options, including language, typography, embedded fonts, cover, notes, and references.

Export​

  1. Select E-book at the top of the preview pane.
  2. Choose the export range, such as the current document, selected files, or All Compilable.
  3. Review EPUB Options. If Embed cover image is enabled, Scribe uses the cover saved in Project Settings.
  4. Choose Export EPUB, select a destination, and save the file.

Scribe writes one .epub file. Preview and validate it before upload.

What the file can include​

Depending on Project content, settings, and plan, the EPUB can include:

  • chapters in file-tree order and navigation based on their headings;
  • manuscript images;
  • an optional e-book cover;
  • supported book information from Project Settings;
  • supported headings, formulas, references, and Ruby annotations;
  • optional embedded fonts whose licences permit redistribution.

The EPUB watermark setting is represented as contributor information rather than a page overlay. Review Watermark before distribution.

Validate and preview​

Use epubcheck to validate the file and a target reading app, such as Calibre, to inspect the reading experience. Also check the target store's current requirements.

Verify chapter order, navigation, images, cover, book information, fonts, notes, references, Ruby, and math that matter to the edition.

Reflowable layout​

The reading app chooses page size, line length, and font size according to the device and reader preferences. Exact line and page breaks from Print preview do not transfer to EPUB.

Scribe does not currently export fixed-layout EPUB. For a layout-dependent edition, consider PDF and verify that format with the intended distributor.
