CJK vertical layout
Scribe can preview Chinese, Japanese, and Korean text in a vertical layout on every plan. Export availability depends on the selected format and plan; see Plans & features.
Vertical layout is set per document. Different documents in one Project can use different master pages and writing directions.
Print layout
- Open Advanced > Master Pages.
- Select or create a suitable master page.
- Set Writing direction to Vertical (CJK) and choose the required binding direction.
- Choose Apply to current document.
- Open Print preview and check the result.
Built-in master pages are available on every plan. Creating and using a custom master page requires Pro.
E-book layout
Open E-book preview and set Writing Direction to Vertical (CJK). EPUB export requires Plus or Pro.
Image export uses a horizontal layout. Use Print PDF or EPUB when you need a vertical exported file, subject to the plan required by that format.

Binding direction
Many CJK vertical books use right binding. Select Right binding (CJK vertical) when it matches the intended edition; a newly created custom master does not choose it automatically.
Support for vertical EPUB varies by reading app and device. Test the exported file in the target reading environment before distribution.
Numbers, Latin text, and punctuation
In vertical layout, Scribe handles vertical punctuation and common groups of one to three half-width digits. Review longer numbers, Latin words, abbreviations, and special symbols in the target preview and exported file.
Scribe does not provide a manual per-word or per-block horizontal override. When a passage depends on mixed writing directions, check whether a separate horizontal document or another layout is more suitable.
Related Pro features
- Ruby annotations for furigana, pinyin, or bopomofo.
- Custom fonts.
- Custom master pages for a specific page size, margins, binding, and bleed.
Use Find and replace to check repeated CJK text in the editor. Word and character counts follow the app's current language behavior; they do not change the exported text.
